Most range hoods in our shop work on recirculation and therefore need no duct. Still, you sometimes deliberately choose extraction to the outside, for example because you want to remove a lot of moisture or because there is already an opening in the wall. In that case, the ductwork largely determines how quietly and powerfully your range hood will work. Below you can read what to look out for.

Round or flat pipes?
For the duct you can choose between round and flat. Round pipes have the least air resistance and are therefore suitable for longer distances. Our standard size is Ø 150 mm, such as the 150 mm round duct. Flat 230 x 80 mm pipes take up less space and are easier to conceal in a wall of cabinets or above a suspended ceiling. That is why the flat duct is popular in modern kitchens.
Why you are better off avoiding flexible hoses
A flexible hose is quick to install, but it is rarely the best choice. The ribs cause turbulence, which means more air resistance and more noise. Grease and dust collect in the folds, making cleaning difficult. A flexible hose is also more prone to tears and deformation, which can lead to leaks. A rigid pipe with a smooth interior is better in every respect.
Connectors and joints
A duct is only as good as its connections. So use suitable connectors, such as the connector for flat pipes, and seal the seams with sealing tape. If you need both round and flat sections, adapters are available. Keep the number of bends to a minimum: every bend costs airflow.
When is an external motor useful?
With a hood that has an internal motor, the noise is right above your head. With an external motor, you place the motor at a distance, for example on the roof or in the duct, and you hear much less in the kitchen. That is attractive for built-in and ceiling units, many of which are supplied without a motor. Wave offers a roof motor and in-line motors for the ductwork, for example.
